Honor Through Action: McCarty's Service To His Community

Eagle Scout Murphy McCarty knew from the start that he wanted to honor the Rumson Police Department (RPD) with his community service project.

After speaking with Rumson Police Chief Scott Paterson about his goals, it was not long before the process was in motion and McCarty was on his way to installing a new community bulletin board at the Rumson Municipal Boat Ramp.

"I wanted to do something to honor the police," McCarty said. "So when Chief Paterson told me that the Police Department's community bulletin board had washed away in Sandy I proposed to put a new one in."

With just over four months of planning, meetings, decision making and an afternoon of hard work with his fellow scouts from Troop 201, McCarty held a dedication ceremony to present the brand-new, community bulletin board in May of 2021.

With Rumson Mayor Joseph K. Hemphill, the Borough Council, RPD Chief Paterson, members of the RPD , Rumson Department of Public Works (DPW) Superintendent Mark Wellner, and members of the DPW in attendance, McCarty thanked everyone for their hard work, collaboration and the opportunity to bring a bulletin board back to the boat ramp for the first time since Hurricane Sandy.

"It feels great that the bulletin board will be used by the Police Department to keep the community informed," McCarty said. "I'm happy to have made a contribution to Rumson that will have a lasting, positive impact."

According to the The National Eagle Scouts Association website, the Eagle Scout Service Project is an opportunity for all of one's scouting training to be put into practice by helping others with a project that will last for years to come. To many, it is the most rewarding part of the journey to Eagle designation.

"I want to thank everyone who helped me from my Troop (Rumson Troop 201), the Rumson PD, especially Chief Paterson, the Rumson Department of Public Works and the Mayor and everyone from the Borough Council who came to the ceremony," McCarty said.

Congratulations on an incredible accomplishment Murphy; well deserved.
