Determination, persistence and effort are three words that were apparent during the conclusion of the Girls on the Run program June 11, 2021. It was an absolute joy to watch these incredible young women complete their 3.1 mile challenge inside the friendly confines of Meadow Ridge Park in Rumson, NJ.

These talented runners began their journey in April under the brilliant leadership of Dr. Carmela Rocchetti Sheinin and Deirdre Spiropoulos. The program started out with the team running a short distance. Over time, the distance increases and the girls aim to complete a 5K/3.1 mile run. Equally important to the running part of the program are some great life lessons that are focused on empower young women and build self esteem. The runners also learned about setting goals, self talk, and making choices, all while making great friendships throughout the process.

An enthusiastic group of spectators were basking with pride watching the runners meander their way through the trails. Even more impressive than their athletic accomplishments was the support and teamwork displayed by the runners as they cheered and supported each other. Many of the runners to finish their race even joined their teammates to get them across the line, displaying some wonderful teamwork.

Perhaps Sophia Salata said it best: “It was a great experience and I really liked it”.

Everyone of these girls did a tremendous job completing the challenge. They were truly an inspiration and Coach Sheinin certainly agreed, stating “We are so proud of how they supported each other. They turned an individual sport into a team sport. Their star power shined brightly even on a cloudy day”.

When asked what she likes best about the program Julianne Spiropoulos explained “It was really fun and I really liked it. The coaches were really encouraging me to be fast and keep running”.

The amazing effort of the girls throughout their journey will undoubtedly set them up for great things in the future. Many will continue their running journey by attacking the Rumson 100 Mile Club this Summer. Most importantly, they made their families and their community so proud.
